As many of you might already know TapBots released an Alpha version of its popular iOS Twitter client for Mac TweetBot. I believe this client is great because it has all kinds of constant and temporal filters like the iOS version. TweetBot for Mac, as we might expect, is still a little buggy and slow, but it is already one of the best Twitter clients for the Mac platform.
However, what really captures my attention is the timing in which it has been released. Twitter has been progressively discouraging app developers from releasing apps that duplicate the functionality of the official client. I don’t know what should be expected from Twitter in the following months, but this opens my eyes about the necessity of having open services which cannot be controlled by a particular company.
Likewise, I do not think anybody should blindly rely all their Internet presence or business in social networks like Facebook or Twitter. People should use them as a complement. Having an open alternative to Twitter should be a top priority for most developers in the following months.
